The South of Downtown Makers Markets are an effort to support the already existing and growing creative entrepreneurial individuals in our community. In August 2019, we hosted dozens of makers at the South of Downtown Art Hub on the corner of 11th and B to sell their goods, attracting nearly 400 people. Makers Markets often charge substantial tabling fees, which can prevent small businesses from reaching new customers or making profit, which is why the makers market is free to participate in. We believe that small businesses and creative entrepreneurs contribute significantly to the vibrancy of our community. Providing opportunities for small businesses to grow and for new businesses to form is a vital part of a thriving local economy and community.
To raise funds to create affordable housing at 1105 E Street in the Spring of 2018, the South of Downtown CDO partnered with one of our greatest community strengths: local restaurants. SDCDO hosted the progressive food tour, 11th Street Eats, featuring Pepe's Bistro, Pan Dulce, and Method Cycles & Craft House. The tour, spanning from 11th and B to 11th and K, had over 40 participants and raised over $500 for the purchase of 1105 E Street. Folks enjoyed a progressive meal, walking the length of our neighborhood on a beautiful spring day. Folks enjoyed vegetarian jackfruit sliders from Pepe's Kitchen, a sweet baked treat from Pan Dulce, and ended the tour with a drink at Method Cycles & Craft house. SDCDO was able to bring both new and regular customers to business, celebrating our neighborhoods' strengths in entrepreneurship, diversity and walkability.
This spring we planned another in-person market until the Coronavirus halted our plans. Since then, we have been working hard to create a platform where people could sell their goods safely. We are so excited to be offering this website as an ongoing contribution to neighborhood infrastructure, here to support small businesses throughout the year. It's vital to support small business now more than ever, to ensure the communities they have helped make so vibrant, remain that way.
We look forward to gathering in real life in the future. For now, we are excited to be using sdmakersmarket.org to share the work of creative entrepreneurs, support existing small businesses and restaurants and help people get connected to the amazing things happening in the South of Downtown focus area, just south of the capitol in Lincoln, NE.
The South of Downtown Makers Market was started in 2019 by the South of Downtown Community Development Organization (SDCDO) in an effort to support local creative entrepreneurs in Everett, Near South and surrounding neighborhoods. SDCDO was born in 2015 in effort to enrich the quality of life for residents in our focus area. In the first few years we had hundreds of conversations, knocked on more than 1,000 doors in the community, and learned that small business played a key role in why people were attracted to the area to begin with.
