I make crochet critters.
Ok, so I’m Sarah (she/her). I was born in Southern California and have moved around every few years since. Lincoln became my home again this spring. I’ve got two rescue dogs and a rescue parakeet and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. I’m part of an anti-ableism book club and staying home has gotten me into a bit of bird watching, otherwise I’m crocheting or drawing little doodles. I started crocheting in 2018 when I found a little kit while I was shopping. The pattern was in British crochet terms, and I was teaching myself using YouTube with American crochet terms. I didn't know there were different types. It was a mess. That one did not turn out as good as they look now. Progress is really super evident when I compare work now to that one. It’s the only one of my little critters that I’ve kept. Then I bought two more kits. I gave them to friends that were having kiddos. Eventually I bought more supplies and started making them on my own. Most were given away through these little auctions I would have on Instagram. The money would go to a charity, usually an animal welfare or rescue. The Platypus I made raised money to rebuild platypus natural habitats in Australia. One of the little critters allowed me to raise $100 for RAICES. I’m making more now to try to get that going again. It’s really inspirational to see folks using whatever they can to try to make the differences that could help someone other than themselves. Doing these little auctions and seeing folks get so excited to win a little creature I made, and knowing that money is going towards something bigger than me...That’s why I keep making these. Plus they’re kinda cute sometimes.
